Meet the 1st Place Winner of our Double Exposure Challenge: Animals & Wildlife competition, Kenneth Deitcher. He is a retired pediatrician who does some beautiful digital imaging. He started out in the traditional darkroom, developing film in both color and black-and-white, but he's moved on to totally digital capture in the past 15 years. His work has been published in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He has also been a regular contributor to the Journal of the Photographic Society of America for more than 35 years.
Double Exposure: What inspired you to get interested in photography initially?
Kenneth Deitcher: I have been interested in photography since my high school years, over 68 years ago. I photographed and developed images of family events and became quite interested in insect and reptile photography in my teen years. I was also a collector of exotic reptiles and insects during that time.
DE: How long have you been doing photography?
KD: I have been photographing for 68 years. I started with a Kodak Brownie and progressed to an Argus C3, a Mercury II, Polaroid, a Pentax, a Canon A2E and recently a Canon 50 D. I switched from film and a chemical darkroom to digital about 15 years ago.
DE: I know that you are a doctor by profession. What type of medicine do you practice?
KD: I was a Pediatrician for over 45 years and displayed many of my photographic images in my office. I am still practicing part-time, working as a consultant for the Armed Forces, examining recruits.
DE: Are you selling your images or doing photography professionally?
KD: I have sold some of my images, but most of them are used for internet and club competitions and in photographic salons. I am a member of the Photographic Society of America and the Schenectady Photographic Society. I present photographic programs for both organizations and have presented at several International photographic meetings. I have not done photography professionally except for some stock photography before 2001.
DE: What Camera Gear and software are you using?
KD: My prime camera equipment is a Canon EOS 50D D-SLR and a Tamron 18�270mm zoom lens. I also use a Canon ring flash and a Canon EF 100mm macro lens for close-ups. The software I consistently use is Adobe Photoshop CS3.
DE: Do you enter a lot of photo competitions?
KD: I usually enter several salons and contests weekly. I rely extensively on my large collection of slides and digital images, which I modify for competitions.
DE: Do you have any particular goals with your photography?
KD: My main goal in photography is personal pleasure and enjoyment in the challenges of digital photography. At the present time, I am hindered in my ability to go out to photograph new material as I have been incapacitated by severe Arthritis for several years. When I do �shoot� I usually do it from a car window.
DE: Do you travel a lot to shoot pictures?
KD: When I was more mobile I traveled to the Amazon, Trinidad, The Galapagos, England and the Virgin Islands. I did many of these shoots to photograph reptiles and insects.
DE: Do you have any new projects?
KD: My newest project is more along the artistic vein. I am using several software programs and plug-ins to create an artistic appearance to my images. I am also a mentor to my two granddaughters, Rebekah and Drue, who are competing against me in club competitions. Many times they outscore the teacher!
DE: Do you have any artistic Influences?
KD: In my youth I enjoyed drawing and artistic projects in grade school. When I was in pre-med and medical school, my time was taken up by my studies.
