Great Photographers of the Recent Past

This month in Double Exposure, we spotlight two photographers who have passed on, but nonetheless made a great contribution to the world of imagery during their lifetimes.
First and foremost, our Cover Story subject is Eddie Adams, the notable photographer who shot the Viet Cong execution image that influenced the outcome of the Vietnam War. Although he always resented taking this image, as it wound up villifying the Vietnamese police chief who had pulled the trigger, Adams won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969. He went on to shoot a body of work that includes celebrities, children with terminal illnesses, U.S. presidents, and several wars. He died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 2004, but is remembered in this article by his widow Alyssa Adams, his sister-in-law Cindy Lou Adkins, and filmmaker Susan Morgan Cooper, who has recently made a documentary about his life. We hope you will enjoy this Cover Story, entitled An Unlikely Weapon: A Film Remembering Eddie Adams.
And secondly, Robert A. Schaefer, Jr. has a story in this issue called A Mother to us All—Recalling Lois Lord. This well-loved teacher and photographer is remembered by a number of students, colleagues and friends who knew her. There will also be a retrospective exhibit of her work this month in New York City.
Aside from these compelling stories, we present a lot of great readers' images in Double Exposure Challenge: Photographing Fall.
