Harlem Studio Fellowship

Harlem Studio Fellowship by Montrasio Arte, a privately funded, nonprofit Residency Program for international artists was founded in 2007 by Ruggero Montrasio and curated by Raffaele Bedarida. Over the past three years, HSF by MA has invited twenty artists to participate in their project, and are increasingly receiving an international recognition.

Susanna Pozzoli, one past artist in resident, is an Italian photographer, based in New York. She has just accomplished an exciting project, started two years ago at HSF by MA, entitled: On the Block. Harlem Private View. This is a photographic portrait of the block where HSF by MA is located (121st Street between Lenox Ave and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard), using only interiors.

On the Block. Harlem Private View has an anthropological approach rather than constitute an accurate architectural documentation of a beautiful brownstones houses in central Harlem. In fact Susanna Pozzoli's main intent is to reveal lives, feelings and private spaces hidden behind the facades. Although absent, their inhabitants collectively emerge through their environments and lyrical details.

After she became part of the Harlem community and she convinced her neighbours to let her enter in their houses, Susanna Pozzoli started photographed their private spaces with her 6x6 Rolleiflex. Considering that Ms Pozzoli wasn’t allowed to set up anything, nor to stage any lights, her work immediately gains more value and significance. The result of this project is a marvellous series of photographs that testifies Pozzoli’s sharp eye and her extraordinary sense of observation.

Also, this project is a reflection on topics such as gentrification, domesticity, identity and privacy. The block reflects a controversial phase of transition: the gentrification is on as  well as a strong neighborliness still exist in central Harlem.
As a conclusion of this project, a comprehensive volume containing a selection of Pozzoli’s photographs will be published by Umberto Alemanni| Montrasio Arte. The book will be distributed in U.S. from 2010.

Susanna Pozzoli studied photography at the Atelier Reflexe in Paris. Recently her work has been shown at the New Orleans Biennial (2008) and at the Photo Festival in Rome (Summer 2009). Also, it has been reviewed by the Studio Museum Harlem Magazine (Summer 2008), and Le Noveul Observateur, France (July 2008).
