Several months ago we announced our Digital Imaging competition, with two categories: Photo Illustration, which was judged by fine-art photographer/Adobe Photoshop expert John Paul Caponigro; and Straight Photography, judged by the Director of the George Eastman House, Tony Bannon. The quality of the hundreds of entries in each category that we received was truly incredible!

We wish to congratulate Dalibor Marinkovic from Croatia, who is the First Place winner in the Photo Illustration category.

"High Hopes" © Dalibor Marinkovic

Photographer's Statement:
"I grew up in small fisherman's village (island of Brac, Croatia), and I remember that as a child, we used to gather on the seashore, waiting for our fathers and grandfathers to come back from fishing. We never knew when and how they'll come back, but we were hoping they'll come back safe and sound, with some fish in their boats, hopefully."

Technical details:
"This image was created in Photoshop, compiled from my photographs taken with either Fuji S1 or Nikon D200, except for the houses on the left side (which is part of my born town) and fishes & boat (which is my father's vessel and hunt). every other part of the image is photomontage, even the figure of the boy is made up of three different poses. The same is true for the rock, the sea and the sky. All the pictures are Croatian landscapes."

We also congratulate Binh Trinh from New Zealand, who is the First Place winner in the Photography category.

"Grumpy Old Man" © Binh Trinh

Photographer's Statement:
"The image is of an old gentleman who used to be a physician/cardiologist at the local hospital. He has wonderful character in his face and is very polite and courteous. However, I felt that his facial features could be better used in a grumpy portrayal. I loved his piano and the old music sheets that he had. he could not keep a straight face at first because it is just not in his nature. The final editing was utilized to enhanced the age of the all the elements as well as to bring out the darker mood of the image."

Technical details:
"This was taken with the Canon EOS 40D and Canon 17-55mm EFS lens. I used off-camera lighting by using a portable tungsten light source, as well as a couple of various lamps around, which explains the harsh shadows. but that's what adds character to the whole image, I believe. It was during the day, but the tungsten light overpowered the natural lighting.

The image was first brought into Adobe Lightroom for preliminary editing, specifically boosting up the shadow and highlights. The image was then exported into Photoshop for advance editing, which involved many curves and levels layers to control the tonal range of the image. Color effect and texture overlay was then added to bring out the mood of the final image. Over 20 layers of editing were employed to create the final image."
