A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE BETHESDA FOUNTAIN/TERRACE
The fountain sculpture, Angel of Waters, was constructed in 1859-64, and one of the Central Park's best known attractions.
Central
Park creators Olmsted and Vaux wanted to provide a place around the
fountain where people could gather, a center for socializing. The
Terrace arcade became just that place. Built in the
mid-1860's by Jacob Wrey Mould, the Terrace is adorned with elaborate
balustrades and
sculptured seasonal details. Two stone staircases lead from the upper
level to the
Bethesda Fountain plaza. The Terrace arcade ceiling is a work of art.
The tiles were manufactured in England.
Bethesda Terrace's past
included an outdoor luncheon restaurant in the 1960s, a congregating
spot for the hippie generation, drug-trafficking venue in the 1970s, and
then just left to rot for the next decade, and the fountain left dry.
Finally, in the 80's, the Central Park Conservancy had the Fountain and
the Terrace restored.
The acoustics in the Terrace are also
superb, and became center stage to a wide variety of artists. The
most famous of these is Thoth, one of New York City's most
celebrated street performers and subject of the 2002 Academy Award
winning film for documentary on a short subject . Troth with
Lila'Angelique, both violinists and singers, are often seen performing
their "solopera" on the weekends.
