Peru, her Peoples and her Past: An explorative travel class
Linda Connor and Adam L. Weintraub
July 5 - July 14, 2010

Nestled in the Andes of Peru at a little over 11,000 feet, Cusco retains powerful bonds with its indigenous past as the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Today its festivals, markets, and everyday street life overflow with unrivaled ethnic and cultural pride. Similarly, the intersection of cultural subjectivity with one's personal perspective offer a unique moment to question a subject's relativity.

In this offering in the mountains of the Andes, we accommodate the sacred and the natural of Linda Connor with the intimacy and confrontation of Lonnie Graham by bringing them together for a master's master class of subject and photographer. Linda's luminous photographs contemplate the poetry and mystery of ancient sites and the timeless realms of the spirit.  Lonnie's limitless portraits see each for whom s/he is and begs the viewer to recognize - however distant - our oneness with them. An investigation of culture and ritual through the eyes of two of photography's most prominent interpreters of the profane and the sacred, the natural and the artistic, the observer and the commentator.

In this workshop, we'll hub at Adam's family compound in central Cusco while spoke to sites of international interest - both sacred ruins and intimate towns. We'll find a common thread flung between distant history and contemporary life; or we’ll search for meaning in the distance between them. That's the beauty of photography and personal perspective - we can make our own vision relate if done effectively. And with this match-up of educators, purveyors of perspective and bold critics, we will be inspired and pushed to proffer our own unique portfolio of Peru, her Peoples and her past.
