| From Photoworkshop.com Double Exposure Challenge CLICK HERE TO SEE A GALLERY OF IMAGES BY THE RUNNERS-UP![]() We received hundreds of awesome Fall entries for our latest Double Exposure Challenge. Congratulations to 1st Place winner Ken Deitcher, 2nd Place winner Sheila Carson, and 3rd Place winner Lucia De Giovanni. Don’t forget to take a look at the great images by the runners-up, which are in the accompanying gallery. As you can see by our winning images, photo opportunities are abundant during the fall. You can shoot great pictures of autumn color, carved pumpkins, or children dressed in an array of Halloween costumes. Days become shorter and the light becomes warmer, which accentuates the changing fall foliage. Besides photographing colorful leaves, look for any subject matter that says "fall," such as pumpkin patches or old barns. Celebrating the Feeling of Autumn In addition to capturing fall colors as they are, try experimenting with Photoshop or another image-editing program to enhance the photo, to transform it into black-and-white, or even create an original work of art, as this photographer has done.
1st Place: “Two Trees” © Ken Deitcher of Albany, NY, who has won Eye Candy 5 from Alien Skin. He states, “The winning image was photographed several years ago. While exploring the filters and effects in Photoshop, I serendipitously came upon a combination of filters that gave me an image that expressed my feelings of fall and autumn colors in an abstract way. The vertical lines and soft edges accentuate the feeling of changes of the seasons.” Adding People to the Scene Photographing friends or family in nature will add interest and a sense of scale to your images. If the subject is facing the camera, be sure that they’re not squinting in bright sunlight. Try to find a spot of open shade, as this photographer did, or alter your shooting position so that they’re looking away from the sun. The warmth and texture of this image evokes a feeling of nostalgia.
2nd Place: “D and the Tree” © Sheila Carson of Bellingham, WA, who has won Painter Essentials 4 from Corel. She says, “The colors that wrap around our town this time of year are spectacular. I came across this tree while walking through one of our local parks. I really wanted to capture the colors on and around the tree. I used my Canon Digital Rebel XT camera with a Sigma 27-70mm f/2.8 lens. The image was then layered with texture and warmth using Photoshop CS3. This was my first attempt at layering with texture.” The Beauty of Close-Ups A whole new world awaits discovery when you take an “up close and personal” view of minute objects. This type of photography can be very gratifying, but close-up and macro work takes time, patience, and the proper equipment. The color and texture of this leaf is emphasized in this beautifully rendered close-up. The black background accentuates the brilliant red leaf in a bold, dramatic way.
3rd Place: “Ardent” © Lucia De Giovanni of Denver, CO, who has won Chameleon 6.0 from AKVIS. She says, "The Fall colors in Colorado are amazing—this image was created in a studio, using one softbox, Nikon equipment and a black velvet background—the depth of field was achieved by taking this shot with no tripod, getting as close as possible and still maintaining clarity. I am very humbled this picture was chosen among such talent, thank you!"
