On September 20, 2008, G2 Gallery in
Venice ,
CA will feature an exhibit by world renowned
environmental photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum. Together, the photographer and the
gallery will support and promote conservation, education, and appreciation of
our natural environment.
Ketchum began his career as
a rock photographer to the stars including Jimmy Hendrix and The Doors. Now, as an author, teacher, and photographer, Ketchum is
dedicated to supporting the environment through his work by addressing several
issues including deforestation, clean air and water, and the preservation of
wilderness. Additionally, in
conjunction with his traveling exhibit, Ketchum lectures widely on the subject
of preserving the ban on the Alaskan fisheries, hoping to prevent the most
productive wild salmon fishery in the world from being destroyed by offshore oil
and gas development and onshore mining.
“G2 is a unique gallery in
Los Angeles
because it is willing to risk exhibiting artists whose work is intentionally
purposeful and addresses critical environmental issues. These contributors to
our visual culture have clearly been stifled by Post-modern trends and the
academy of institutional curators that have ignored their contributions,” said
Ketchum.
Ketchum’s ongoing
commitment to the environment has earned him much critical acclaim, including
being named one of American Photo magazine’s “100 most
important people in photography” and featured as one of Audubon’s 100 people who “shaped the
environmental movement in the 20th century.” He was the first visual artist in
residence at the Sundance Film Festival, and his works were featured with Robert Redford, who personally invited
him to display his photography.
Recognized by George Bush Sr., King Gustaf, and the President of Brazil, Ketchum received
the United Nations’ Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award.
G2 Gallery is a natural fit
to showcase Ketchum’s work. As an
environmentally conscious gallery, G2 donates proceeds
from ALL sales to
environmental charities, including Friends of Ballona Wetlands and the Theodore
Payne Foundation.
The exhibit will feature
Ketchum’s photography including his recent work on the Bristol Bay Salmon
Fishery and his re-introduced images from his Sundance residence. Also on display will be Ketchum’s large
panel embroideries that reach up to six feet in height which have been
meticulously translated from his photography.
