A CAMERA, TWO KIDS AND A CAMEL: My Journey in Photographs

National Geographic Photographer Annie Griffiths Belt’s Photographic Memoir

For the past three decades, award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths Belt has circled the globe, capturing stunning images and living one adventure after another. Along the way, she married, gave birth to two children and kept right on going with youngsters in tow. In a lively, humorous photographic memoir published by National Geographic Books, Belt chronicles her career and travels, shares lessons learned from people she has met and reveals how she still managed to remain a hands-on mom.

A CAMERA, TWO KIDS AND A CAMEL: My Journey in Photographs
is filled with beautiful images and inspiring stories of how it all came together: the strategies that made the family’s adventurous lifestyle possible, the exhilarating work of photographing a National Geographic story, and the wonders found in the unlikeliest places.

The 224-page book contains 150 stunning color photographs from her travels to nearly 100 countries, poignant stories of her encounters with cultures from around the world, and the wisdom she gained from sharing these remarkable experiences with her “movable” family.

Known for her sensitive nature and ability to bridge the divide that sometimes exists between people of distant cultures and beliefs, Belt has been connecting with her subjects since she started working for National Geographic as one of its first woman photographers in 1978. “I have learned,” she observes, “that even without a shared language, it’s easy to let people know that their children are beautiful, their homes are lovely…and their stories are worth sharing with the world.”

A CAMERA, TWO KIDS AND A CAMEL showcases the highlights of Belt’s career — from traveling by camel with Bedouins to swimming with sea lions in the Galápagos Islands to paddling alongside gray whales in Baja California.

Belt’s children, Charlie and Lily, born globetrotters, have grown up to become “travelers for life,” always up for the next adventure and captivated by new cultures and experiences. Treasuring a world of memories and landscapes in their hearts, they have been an integral part of their mother’s journey — learning to shear sheep in England, luge in New Zealand and body surf in Australia. In 1997, 7-year-old Lily joined her mother on an eight-day horse pack trip into the remote backcountry of Yellowstone National Park, where they were caught in a freak blizzard and witnessed a total lunar eclipse. “The temperature hovered around 20 degrees F all day and dropped well below zero every night. Yet Lily and I were in heaven,” she writes.
