Weekly Assignment: 'Drama with Shadows' & 'Cool Reflections'

Membership in Photoworkshop.com offers numerous benefits.  For instance, every week a new photographic exercise is offered that challenges members to apply their creative, artistic and technical talents.  Known as the “Weekly Assignment,” it is a popular feature that is open only to Photoworkshop.com members.  

What is the Weekly Assignment and how does it work?

Every Friday, specific themes are assigned that are to be interpreted and photographed within the following six-day period.  Images shot before the specified start date are not eligible.  The challenge is for the photographer to create new images based upon the weekly themes.  

The Weekly Assignment begins Friday 06-27-08. It will run through Thursday 07-03-08.  

1 – Drama with Shadows

The purpose of this theme is to use shadow to dramatically enhance images, while at the same time preserving detail in the shadow, mid-range and highlight areas.  The photographer must pay careful attention to exposure values and use precise metering to maintain maximum detail throughout the image.  

2 – Cool Reflections

“Cool Reflections” challenges the photographer to photograph reflections on the surface of water, glass or other surface and avoid “hot spots” by properly balancing metering and exposure.  

The main objective of the Weekly Assignment is for photographers to combine their finest creative, compositional and interpretive abilities with their best technical skills to create exciting images that define the theme(s) visually.  

Comments made on the posted images are an important part of the fun and the learning experience that the Weekly Assignments offer.  In addition to commenting on the Weekly Assignments, members are encouraged to offer comments on images posted to the Photoworkshop.com/Wiley Photo Workshop Book Series.
